Surgery.
September 16th, 2018

Finally, D-Day arrived.

I went to the hospital on 16 September 2018, one day before the surgery, to make everything ready.

I was transported to the surgery theater where a doctor was going to implant a flexible needle in my back trough which I could inject a dose of Morphine in my spine when needed.

This device, injecting Morphine in the spine by the patient himself to ease the pain, was used for painfull surgery.

He assured me that I would be very grateful to have this implant when the surgery would be finished.

Every time I would feel pain, I only had to push a button and immediately a small dose of Morphine would be injected in my spine.

After the implantation, I returned to my room and I send a message to my brother with the room number where I would be staying.

At the evening, I received a message from Inge, my brothers' daughter, that she wanted to visit me before the operation.

Inge was working at the same hospital and we had not seen each other for a long time.

Inge had also contacted my youngest sister Diana, and she had promised to contact me later.

I didn't had hear anything from her a long time.

Around 8pm, I received a SMS message from her and we had a chat.

In a discussion with her friends at school, my daughter wrote that she was hoping that I would come back from the hospital soon.

The next day, 17 September 2018, a phone call from my daughter at 8 am woke me up.

She was very happy to hear me on the phone.

At 12:10 PM, I was brought into the surgery theatre and the surgeons started their work.

Cutting my Aorta open from the hearth to my legs, insert an artificial pipe into the Aorta and close the Aorta again.

The surgeon was also going to put an artificial aorta in the blood vessels to the Kidneys, the Liver, and other organs of my body.

A difficult operation would be the aorta to my kidney as this aorta had already "In Vitro" surgery in 1995 and a stent was placed to open the Aorta.

Later, back in Thailand, I realised that the doctor had removed 2 ribs from my left side.

I send an email to the hospital asking for an explanation and they responded that they had to remove 2 ribs on 1 side in order to access the aorta near the heart.

As the removed ribs were "Floating Ribs", there was no way to put then back after the surgery.

The next day, 18 September, I woke up in the Intensive Care room.

Later that day, the doctor who had performed the surgery came to see me and said that the operation took a lot of time but was OK now.

Two days later, I was recovered enough to be transferred to the room.

On September 20, 3:45 PM, I received an SMS from my brother, asking if I could receive a visit already.

SMS Message from my brother: "Can you receive visitors already?".

One minute later, I received an SMS from Diana, my younger sister, asking if everything was well.

I didn’t feel to much pain and everything seemed to go well.

The next few days my daughter came to visit me almost every day and we were making plans to return to Thailand.

She was very happy that the surgery went so well.

Revalidating could be done in Thailand as well.

My brother brought my daughter to visit me, sometimes with his wife.

The chats with my brother and his wife were very short and mostly they would leave my daughter with me and go to drink something at the canteen of the hospital.

Everything seemed to go well until end of September.

On September 23th, the nurses who came change the dressing noticed something that was not normal and called a doctor.

Due to my high blood pressure, the aorta was starting to burst and blood was coming out of the aorta and spreading over my lungs and other organs causing fever because of an infection.

I was crawling from pain and I could barely sleep because of the pain in my Torso.

Despite the Morphine injections.

The doctor analysed me and ordered a few test for the next day.

Doppler scan, X-Rays, etc.

I am not a doctor, but something was ringing a bell for me.

Something was going wrong with the operation, was my first guess.

The next day, 24th September, Inge messaged me to know the results.

But nobody was telling me what was going on.

A few friends came also to visit me.

Some of them had been living in Thailand with me, but had to go back to Belgium for medical reasons or for family problems.

Jef de Groof and his wife Kamlai did return 1 year before because a Cancer was detected in his brain and he was happy to see me back in Belgium.

On 27 September my daughter called me, still full of joy, to know how I was and I tried to explain to her that I had an infection and the doctor didn’t want to let me go as long as I had an infection.

But my daughter didn’t understand what an “infection” was.

Her teacher in Thailand, Mrs. Bee, asked her how I was and she answered that she might need to stay another month in Belgium.

Nevertheless, the teacher from Thailand send again a scaremonging message to my daughter.

Altough I had already explained the situation to the direction of the school 2 times already and the school confirmed their agreement.
